There was no true formality to our method of investigating a franchise. We neither consulted with a franchise attorney nor spoke with any authorities. Instead, we conducted our research through reading various trade publications, franchise, and business opportunity magazines.
The criteria we used to choose the right and best franchise for us were as follows:
- A franchise that would be compatible with our interests, while falling in the same price range.
- A franchise company that showed an immediate and genuine interest in prospective franchisees. (While we had selected several franchises, most of the companies did not return our calls! When we called Dr. Vinyl, we received a call back the very same day from the president, who was very knowledgeable and articulate, and welcomed our questions.)
- A franchise that was immediately accessible (returned calls right away, sent out UFOC and sales videotape right away).
- A franchisor and its franchisees who provided positive feedback.
- A franchise that allayed all our fears.
